WATER I had the honor of serving as the Radio Officer aboard the unique Research Vessel Heraclitus traveling from Miami to Madeira on through the Strait of Gibraltar to Sardinia, Livorno, Malta and finally Crete, Greece. During this almost year-long odyssey I made many interesting recordings including underwater recordings of whales and dolphins. I plan to post some samples from this trip here along with some pictures. The underwater recordings helped me complete research for my NYU master's thesis, "Simulated Head Movement: A Four Channel Hydrophone Array and Preamplifier System for Underwater Sound Recording and Localization." If you are interested in underwater sound recording or want to discuss a project or possible application of this technology please contact me. I am currently upgrading my underwater rig and hope to redeploy it in the Indian Ocean soon with my dear friend (and RVH compatriot) Michel Lippitsch. He will be sailing aboard a new vessel called Mir. In the meantime, I would like to share that my affinity for water is as strong as ever. On July 31, 2010 I swam The Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim. This annual one-mile swim across the Hudson raises funds for the non-profit volunteer organization River Pool at Beacon. Inspired by the legendary folk-singer and Hudson River champion Pete Seeger, it shines a light on this magnificent natural resource. Check out this link for more information about Pete Seeger's vision for a river pool at Beacon. This is becoming an annual tradition for me and my family. Although I do not consider myself an accomplished open-water competitor, I am very proud to share that on July 26, 2008 I completed the 6th Annual Alcatraz100 "Swim with the Centurions" in San Francisco, CA. This is a 1.25 mile open water swim in very cold water from Alcatraz Island across the bay to Aquatic Park on the mainland. My time was a respectable 54:15.7 - which placed me 29th in the non-wet suit category. Frankly, I was just thrilled to make it across! |
